Most Poles do not know the basic concepts related to online security, according to a study conducted by Santander Consumer Bank (Santander CB) for the next report in the “Polish Own Portfolio” series. More than half of the respondents were unable to provide a definition of chargeback (64% of respondents), phishing (61%) and skimming (65%).
“After the responses of the respondents, we can see that the respondents with primary education and people over 50 years of age or older had the greatest problems with these concepts. This is most likely due to the fact that younger people with higher education had the opportunity to encounter these terms more often during their studies. However, even for them they often cause problems, which shows how much we need education in the subject of cybersecurity,” said Ewelina Krzynowy, director of internet sales from Santander CB.
According to the Santander CB survey, we are aware of our ignorance. Every fourth Pole stated that his knowledge of the dangers of using the Internet is definitely good (24%), including the most 18-29-year-olds (42%). Every third assessed it at 3 (33%), and every tenth at 2 (approx. 11%).
Although the state of our knowledge about the dangers of the Internet leaves much to be desired, some of us do not seem interested in training. Every fifth respondent by Santander CB admitted that they had never looked for any news on this subject (20%). The overwhelming majority (80%) of Poles admitted, however, that they had read information on cybersecurity at least once in their lives. This may herald that our knowledge will improve over time, especially if we use trustworthy sources, e.g. the website of a bank or an office, it was underlined in its report.
“According to our study, 56% of Poles used this method of learning about online dangers at least once in their lives. Most people read articles online (63%), but friends (33%) and social media (41) were also popular sources of information. In the case of the latter, it is worth being careful and applying critical thinking, because not always the advice we meet there is given by people with appropriate competences,” concluded Krzynowy.
The survey was commissioned by Santander CB in a telephone survey conducted by the Institute for Market and Social Research (IBRiS) in January 2022. A representative group of adult Poles took part in the survey. Sample n = 1001.
