Polish government plans to increase expenditure on the army by PLN 2.9 billion

The draft law on the defense of the Fatherland assumes acceleration of the planned increase in expenditure on the army to 2.3% in 2023 and to 2.5% in 2024 and subsequent years (compared to 2.2% of GDP this year). .), results from the assessment of the effects of the regulations on the draft law on the defense of Poland, which was submitted to the Sejm.

Therefore, it is planned to increase expenditure from the state budget for this purpose by PLN 2,902.3 million in 2023, by PLN 6,154.3 million in 2024, and by PLN 6,515.3 in 2025. in ten years it would be PLN 30,685 million.

In accordance with the provisions of the Act of May 25, 2001 on technical reconstruction and modernization and financing of the Polish Armed Forces, the limit of defense expenditure is based on the rates of share of these expenditure in GDP, which are: in the years 2022-2023 – 2, 2%, in 2024-2025 – 2.3%, in 2026-2029 – 2.4% and in 2030 and subsequent – 2.5%.

The expenses resulting from the solutions proposed in the act will, in principle, be secured as part of financing defense needs constructed on the basis of the increased dynamics of the increase in the ratio of the share of defense expenditure in GDP.

The draft law on the defense of the Fatherland provides, inter alia, increasing the number of soldiers to approx. 300 thousand and technical modernization of the army. The proposed act would enter into force in 2023.

Currently, the Polish Army numbers about 111,500 professional soldiers and 32,000 soldiers of the Territorial Defense Forces.

The government has adopted a draft law on the defense of the Fatherland, which provides, inter alia, increase in the number of soldiers to approx. 300 thousand, increase in defense spending – due to Poland’s membership in NATO – to 2.5% of GDP by 2024. and the technical modernization of the army on February 22 this year.
