Construction production in the Czech Republic returned to growth last year, increasing by 1.4 percent year on year after a previous decline of 6.2 percent. Production in building and civil engineering increased. In December alone, construction accelerated year-on-year growth to 8.1 percent from two percent in November, and in terms of production growth, it was the most successful month in construction last year. Month-on-month, production was 1.8 percent higher. This resulted from information published today by the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ).
According to the director of the Department of Statistics on Agriculture and Forestry, Industry, Construction and Energy of the Czech Statistical Office, Radek Matějka, the Czech construction industry struggled with an extraordinary rise in prices and a lack of construction capacity during the year. Building construction, which includes the construction of flats, offices or warehouses, increased by 1.5 percent year on year last year. Civil engineering, especially transport construction, grew by a percentage.
The number of building permits issued by the authorities last year rose by 5.8 percent year on year to 90,960. The approximate value of permitted constructions reached 521.9 billion crowns, which was a third more than in 2020. Last year, construction began on 45,244 dwellings, up 28.3 percent year-on-year. The number of completed dwellings last year increased by 0.7 percent to 34,641.
Production in building and civil engineering also grew in December, but building construction was more successful. “It must be added that the base from the previous year was very low. After three months of declines, civil engineering also grew year-on-year and both segments also increased month-on-month, which is positive news,” added Petra Cuřínová, head of construction and housing statistics.
Building construction recorded a year-on-year increase of 10.5 percent in the last month of the year, construction of civil engineering rose by 2.2 percent.
7919 building permits were issued in December, up 8.3 percent year on year. The approximate value of these constructions increased by more than half year-on-year to 51.4 billion crowns. The number of dwellings started in December increased by 120.8 percent to 6024 compared to December 2020, while the number of completed dwellings decreased by 18.7 percent to 3647.
The average registered number of employees in the construction industry decreased by 1.5 percent year-on-year last December, and their average gross monthly wage increased by 4.4 percent year-on-year compared to December 2020. For the whole of last year, construction employees fell by an average of 1.1 percent year on year and their gross earnings rose by 5.1 percent year on year.
