Opava City Council looking for contractor for its winter stadium reconstruction

3 February 2022

The Opava City Council wants to announce a tender by the end of February for a company that will ensure an extensive reconstruction of the winter stadium. Work should begin in the spring after the end of this season, lasting a year. According to previous budgets, the costs are around CZK 218 million, City Hall management expects the amount to increase, according to the Mayor of Opava, Tomáš Navrátil (YES).

“We will have a revised and updated itemized budget available in February. I assume that the price will increase due to the increase in the price of materials. I estimate 250 to 260 million crowns,” he said. He added that the city already has a final construction decision.

The mayor said that work should begin in May or June. Next season will not be, we will lose here. We are dealing with alternative variants for all ages that the winter stadium uses. The city wants to use the surrounding winter stadiums, it is also considering a mobile ice rink, where it would be improvised training under the tent.

“The building from the 50s of the last century is dilapidated and in poor technical condition. The aim of the project is a modern building that can also be used for cultural and social events. “The existing winter stadium, which has long since ceased to function 100%, has become a great disgrace to Opava over the years,” said the Mayor.

The city has an architectural study at its disposal, which cleans the original historic hall from gradual installations and lets the original steel structure stand out. “On the contrary, all the original construction elements will be kept as far as possible and applied visually,” said the city’s chief architect Petr Stanjura.

New grandstands for 2,000 spectators are designed on the original concrete steps of the stadium’s grandstands. All load-bearing elements will be below the level of the seats so as not to impair the view of the ice surface and not affect the appearance of the interior. The builders will remove the associated architecturally worthless extensions connected to the hall from the south-west side and replace them with a new extension, including a restaurant and a lounge.

There will also be areas for practice of shooting, stability, skating speed and starts behind the wheel. The space for practicing hockey skills is designed with regard to the organization of youth camps. Training equipment is complemented by modern gym and gym. The project also emphasizes regeneration, which is designed for all ages. It includes massage cabins, a Finnish and steam sauna, a cooling pool, and a relaxation area.

The revitalization of the complex envisages the restoration of the historic hall with an emphasis on the technical and industrial quality of the building.
