Construction output in the Czech Republic slowed year-on-year growth to 2% in November

7 January 2022

Construction production in the Czech Republic last November slowed down year-on-year growth to two percent from 3.7 percent in October. Building construction, which is the construction of residential and non-residential buildings, increased by 5.1 percent year on year. On the contrary, civil engineering, ie the construction of roads or telecommunications and energy networks, fell by four percent. Month-on-month, construction output remained at the same level. This follows from data published today by the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ).

“November’s construction performance was very similar to October’s and construction output continued to grow year on year due to building construction. Civil engineering declined, but the base was significantly higher than ground construction. Both segments remained at last month’s level,” said the director of agricultural statistics. and forestry, industry, construction and energy ČSÚ Radek Matejka.

Construction production hit the covid-19 epidemic in March 2020, after the epidemic began. It has been steadily weakening since April 2020 and has only been strengthening year on year since last May.

Last November, building authorities issued 7,442 building permits, up 2.5 percent year on year. The approximate value of these constructions increased by 41.1 percent to 52.1 billion crowns.

The number of dwellings started in November increased by 14.7 percent year-on-year to 3,202 dwellings. On the other hand, the number of completed dwellings fell by 10.7 percent year on year to 3,342 dwellings. In family houses it was by 5.7 percent less, in apartment houses the number of completed dwellings decreased by 35.5 percent.

“While the start of housing construction is on the rise, finishing work is stalled,” said Petra Cuřínová, head of the ČSÚ’s construction and housing construction statistics department. According to her, in the case of apartment buildings, the decline is influenced by a high comparison base. The completion of family houses returned to the red after a promising October, due to a lack of construction capacity and rising prices for building materials, she added.

The average registered number of employees in the construction industry decreased by 0.6 percent year-on-year last November, and their average gross monthly wage increased by 7.8 percent year-on-year compared to November 2020.
