Central Group announces student architectural competition on the Vltava Philharmonic

2 November 2021

Central Group has opens the 14th student architectural competition. This year’s assignment is “Design of the National Concert Building – Vltava Philharmonic” with the subtitle “What form could the new architectural landmark of Prague take?”. Students are expected to have a range of inspiring ideas on how to integrate the Vltava Philharmonic building into the complex conditions of the place. Students will compete for a total of CZK 175,000 and an internship with renowned Czech architect Josef Pleskot.

Students should bring an inspiring ideological urban-architectural concept of the appearance of the new national concert building, which is the Vltava Philharmonic in Prague’s Holešovice.

“The building of the Vltava Philharmonic should be very kind and friendly. It must be an extraordinary cultural building that will cover various social gatherings and activities for 24 hours a day,” says architect Josef Pleskot, who as a member of the Association for the Construction of a New Concert Hall in Prague and a member of the Association for Architecture and Development has been supporting the Philharmonic for many years. The competition will offer an internship in his studio.

The building should transform the entire Vltavská area delimited from the south by the Vltava River, from the east by the Negrelli Viaduct, from the west by the building of the former Dopravní podnik hl. m. Prague and from the north by the metro station Vltavská. “In such a limited area, the upper and lower Holešovice should be connected, connected with the river and blended with the entire Prague skyline and its historical landmarks,” added architect Pleskot, adding that this should create a distinctive public space, which will become part of the center of Prague.

The connection with the Vltava River continues the tradition of locating important public buildings along the river. The Philharmonic should have a main concert hall, several other smaller, multi-purpose halls, a main entrance foyer, ensemble facilities and spaces for additional cultural and educational functions. The total gross floor area should not exceed CZ 50,000 sqm.
