Vaclav Havel Airport Prague cleared almost 654,000 passengers in September, a rise of 63 percent y/y, but a drop of over 60 percent compared to the pre-coronavirus period, according to data of Letiste Praha, the airport’s operator.

The busiest air route was between Prague and Amsterdam in September. Flights are currently operated from Prague to more than 100 destinations. Passenger numbers decreased by about 20 percent y/y to 2.73 million in January to September. Last year’s data include the months before the coronavirus outbreak.

Nearly 700,000 passengers were handled in Prague in August, the strongest month this year. Letiste Praha head Jiri Pos said previously that the number of passengers will be falling again in the autumn.

Amsterdam was the most popular destination in September, followed by Tel Aviv and Hurghada. In terms of countries, it was Greece, Spain and Italy. The Prague airport reported 7,733 take-offs and landings in September, 61 percent more y/y. Air traffic volume is still well below the levels before the outbreak of the pandemic.

Unlike in previous years when the Prague airport saw record-high passenger numbers, the number of passengers went down at an annual rate of 79 percent to 3.66 million over coronavirus last year. It was the lowest figure in 25 years.

Passenger numbers to be handled at the Prague airport this year are estimated at around 4 million, Pos said recently referring to the latest forecasts. The company will apparently make a loss worth hundreds of millions of crowns, like last year.
