The Czech Telecommunication Office has launched a review of the quality and manner of providing and securing basic services and their availability throughout the Czech Republic at the Czech Post. The Office will also review the need to impose an obligation to provide and secure basic postal services for the new licensee from 2023, according to a company announcement.
The state of Česká pošta, as the current licensee for the provision of basic services, including the operation of a branch network or the delivery of consignments at a regulated price, pays a demonstrable loss of up to CZK 1.5 billion per year. However, the payment is very lengthy and the post office last received the money for 2017.
According to spokeswoman Tereza Meravá, the Telecommunications Office will also focus on the availability of similar services and on market development trends in the area of demand, for example, what are the needs and interest of citizens in basic services.
“Based on the results of the review, the CTU will issue a reasoned intention to impose or not impose an obligation to provide some or all basic services on all or part of the country, which will be submitted for public consultation. January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2027, “Meravá added.
The Czech Post operates 3,200 branches and employs around 27,000 people. It recently announced that it would split into a branch and commercial delivery service provider within three years. Last year, it increased its loss by one billion to almost CZK 1.4 billion.
