IKEM will start building new pavilions, the costs will exceed CZK 1 billion

12 May 2021

The Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM), which is the largest transplant center in the Czech Republic, will begin building two more pavilions. The costs will exceed one billion crowns, and the state will contribute to the construction. The extension will enable the expansion of cardiovascular and transplant programs, and there will also be a new emergency admission.

IKEM announced in recent days that due to the construction of new pavilions, the seventy-three-year-old cardiac surgeon Jan Pirk will end up as the head of the cardio center at the end of June. He will be replaced by Josef Kautzner, who is now Pirk’s deputy and also the head of the IKEM cardiology clinic. According to IKEM management, the construction should be managed by a cardiologist from the point of view of the cardio center. Pirk said he did not want to quit and was fired. He will continue to operate and teach at IKEM.

The new pavilions will be connected to the current main building of the hospital from the north side. Last year, IKEM planned that they would open in 2023. Their construction was preceded by the expansion of the energy center to ensure sufficient electricity input for new buildings.
