The increase in unemployment in January is a permanent phenomenon of the Polish labor market related to the seasonality of employment, the expiry of the period for which temporary contracts were concluded at the end of the year, or the termination of participation in activation measures.

“This year, this was also accompanied by the restrictions on business activity introduced in connection with the pandemic. In January this year, mainly sellers, cooks, construction and maintenance workers, locksmiths, car mechanics, warehouse workers and bricklayers. These are the professions in which the largest number of unemployed have been registered for years “- commented Deputy Minister Iwona Michałek, quoted.

The unemployment rate did not exceed 11% in any of the voivodships, although it was strongly diversified territorially. The lowest registered unemployment rate was recorded in Wielkopolskie (3.9%), and the highest in Warmińsko-Mazurskie (10.6%), the ministry said.

“The labor market in Poland shows resistance to the crisis caused by COVID-19, which is confirmed by Eurostat data. Thanks to instruments addressed to Polish entrepreneurs, we have managed to protect 6.6 million jobs. If unemployment grows alarmingly, we will take actions aimed at limiting the negative impact of closing the economy, primarily on the labor market, “Michałek assessed.
