In the first three quarters of this year, 12,876 new homes were built, 25 percent more than a year earlier. The number of dwellings to be built on the basis of issued building permits and simple notifications was 17,278, 37 percent less than in the same period in 2019. The number of dwellings to be built in Budapest and the cities halved last year – CSO announced the latest figures.
In Budapest, 2,420 apartments were occupied, 4.1 percent less than in the first three quarters of 2019. Housing construction increased in all other settlement categories, by 34 per cent in cities with county status, by 48 per cent in other cities and by 19 per cent in villages. The proportion of dwellings built by natural persons was 44 per cent and the proportion of dwellings built by enterprises was 55 per cent. Of the dwellings used in new residential buildings, 49 per cent were located in family houses, 43 per cent in multi-apartment buildings and 3.5 per cent in residential parks. The average floor area of occupied dwellings decreased by 1.5 square meters to 95.6 square meters compared to the first three quarters of 2019. The number of dwellings to be built on the basis of building permits and notifications was 17,278, 37 percent less than in the same period in 2019.
The different categories of settlements were characterized by different processes: the number of dwellings to be built in large cities was just over half of last year (55 per cent in Budapest and 54 per cent in cities with county status). In smaller settlements, the decrease was more moderate, the number of dwellings to be built in cities was 70 percent of the previous year’s value, and in villages it was 83 percent. Builders used the simple reporting option in 55 percent of cases. Compared to the first three quarters of 2019, the number of dwellings to be built on the basis of permits and notifications decreased in most counties, but increased by 77 per cent in Fejér county, 8.8 per cent in Veszprém county and 12 per cent in Nógrád county.
Compared to the same period in 2019, a total of 8,452 residential buildings are planned to be built in the country, 22 percent less, based on new building permits issued. The number of permits issued for non-residential buildings was 2,814, down 11 percent from a year earlier.
