Frankfurt Airport reports a sharp drop in passengers

19 August 2020

Despite the summer vacation, Frankfurt Airport is continuing to feel the impact of the pandemic, as the number of passengers has fallen by more than 77 percent compared 2019. From August 10 to 16, the airport operator Fraport counted 353,289 passengers, which was 77.3 percent fewer than in the corresponding calendar week in 2019. It was also around 150 passengers less than in the previous week. The number of aircraft movements at the airport fell 61.3 percent, while the volume of freight and airmail dropped 13.7 percent to 32,588 tons for that week, following an 11 percent drop the week before. While flights to many destinations were renewed in June, there have been new travel warnings to traditionally popular holiday destinations, including mainland Spain and some islands such as Mallorca. The German airline Lufthansa doesn’t expect air travel to return to its pre-pandemic levels until 2024.
