The German automobile group Daimler is prepared to pay out more than $2 billion in order to put at least part of the Dieselgate scandal behind it. The money would be paid to American authorities and to consumers who took part in class action suits against the company. Around 250,000 diesel cars and vans were found to have been equipped with software that would trick inspectors over the total level of emissions they produced. Daimler insists that it has been cooperating fully with American institutions during the investigation into its wrongdoing, which did massive damage to its reputation. The settlement would have no impact on ongong criminal investigations into the matter.
