Nikola Tesla Airport gets a new runway in two years

7 August 2020

A 3,500 meter runway is to be built at Nikola Tesla Airport in Belgrade, part of a €730 million investment into improving and modernizing the transportation hub. These include the expansion of the terminal, the new runway and taxiways, new places for aircraft parking as well as for cars and finally a new de-icing and anti-icing platform. Work on the improvements is underway despite the coronavirus crisis.

Along with the terminal expansion, a new energy plant is being built that will be more environmentally friendly and reduce emissions. In addition, solar panels are to be installed at the airport. The goal for the airport’s managers was to reach 15 million passengers by 2043. Last year, it was used by a total of 6.2 million passengers but traffic in 2020 was 60 percent reduced as of the end of June.
