The fifth biggest employer in the Czech Republic is looking for ways to cut costs and has warned its workforce that vacations may be shortened in order to avoid job cuts. But the director of Czech Railways warned that even if vacation times and other benefits were cut, it still might be necessary to get rid of hundreds of jobs in administration. Talks with labor representatives are scheduled to begin in August. Czech Railways employs 23,500 people who earn an average of CZK 35,000. Management is adamant that there’s no chance of cutting back on the number of train engineers it has. The company has come under heavy criticism in recent weeks after several accidents resulted in dozens of injuries. Czech Railways suffered major losses during the pandemic as most people stopped travelling by train during that period.
