VDL Nedcar to continue Mini production, but BMW axes X1

18 June 2020

VDL Nedcar intends to keep production lines running at the Dutch factory that produces MINI cars. The announcement follows the news on Wednesday that its parent company BMW Group would end the production of the X1 model earlier than planned. VDL Nedcar will as a result be focusing on the production of Mini Convertible and Countryman cars.

It was originally supposed to turn out BMW X1 cars until 2030, but this will likely be cut back to just 2023. VDL Nedcar will be looking for other manufacturers in the future in order to diversify its customer base and reduce its dependence on the BMW Group. Until recently, the plant was also putting out Smart ForFour and the Mitsubishi Colt, which were the result of collaboration between Smart’s parent company Daimler and Japan’s Mitsubishi.
