Between January and April 2020, ports in Portugal handled a total of 28.63 million tons of cargo, a decrease of 4.1 percent compared to the same period in 2019. The Mobility and Transport Authority (AMT) reported that in the month of April, at the height of the pandemic emergency, port movement decreased 5.3 percent in comparison with April 2019.

The decrease registered corresponded to a 1.23 million ton decline in the volume of cargo, with the biggest portion of this decline registered at the Port of Lisbon, where volume dropped 24.7 percent, or just over 900,000 tons.
Three ports increased their total tonnage figures: Viana do Castelo, Leixões (Porto), Figueira da Foz (Coimbra) and Faro.
