Following rent support measures that were introduced in April, Portugal’s parliament has approved a new round of support measures, including the extension of existing ones. Loans approved by the country’s Institute for Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU) have been extended until September 1. These allow tenants with a proven loss of income to take out interest-free loans for the purpose of paying their rent. Flexible rent payments end in June. The government decided not to extend this measure, as the debt to the landlords would have required payment beginning in July.
Additionally, municipalities have been the ability to reduce the rents in publicly owned housing to tenants who have suffered a verifiable loss of income of more than 20 percent.
