Unemployment rises 8 percent in April in Spain

In April, 282,891 people lost their jobs in Spain, for a total gain of 8 percent. This brought the total number of unemployed people in the country to 3.8 million. The regions with the highest unemployment are Catalonia, Madrid and Valencia, according to the Ministry of Labor which has paid out €4.51bn in benefits. At the end of April, 5.2 million people were on furlough. They are thus entitled to 70 percent of their base salary for six months and 50 percent after that. Companies can add to the 70 percent, and if hours are cut normal wages will be paid for the percentage of the days they work.
