The Slovak-German Chamber of Commerce has called for the re-opening of the Slovak border to enable the economic revival of the country. It said that the European Union was its more important trading partner, with more than 75 percent of all exports heading to countries in the union. “In order to restart the economy from the crisis, it will have to be easier to supply goods and services to Europe, not more difficult,” wrote the chamber. Its president Peter Lazar said that opening the borders was the most important step in order to make it easier to cross them. At the moment, trucks with goods and people who cross the border for work run into bureaucratic delays during the busiest parts of the day. With European industrial producers restarting production, including automobile manufacturers in Slovakia, problems at the borders will only get worse. Prime minister Igor Matovič has said that the next round of easing restrictions won’t take place until May 6 at the earliest. There were just six new cases of COVID-19 announced on April 26.
