Business became even tougher for Czech companies along the Slovak border after Easter because new rules for allowing foreign workers over the border have cut them off from their Slovak employees. It’s estimated that as many as 28,000 Slovaks work in the Southern Moravian region. “For us, it’s tragic because the people from Slovakia are irreplaceable,” said the co-owner of Tech-trade Pavla Zálešáková. “We’re having to solve it by having our people work more shifts, which at this time isn’t something I see as positive because we’re working flat out to the edge of exhaustion.” Since last last, any Slovak crossing the border would have to wait 14 days in quarantine before being allowed to begin working. Deputy prime minister Jan Hamáček says the government has been in discussions for several days with Slovak officials about the problem, adding that Slovakia is even stricter in its guidelines.
