Pandemic having a widening impact on Serbian agriculture

21 April 2020

Freedom of movement restrictions has had a damaging effect on agriculture, and the complications continue to widen, often in unexpected ways. One of these is the inability of Serbian beekeepers to visit their apiaries during a critical time of the year. Serbia produces up to 10,000 tons of honey annually, of which 20 percent is sold abroad for around €15m. Without access to their hives, beekeepers are unable to estimate the total extent of the damage, but they warn that they have the most work during March and April. The longer they’re unable to work, the worse the situation will become, something which could begin to impact on the crops of fruit growers.
