President Zeman favors leaving borders closed for 1 year

20 April 2020

Czech president Miloš Zeman didn’t just ask citizens for patience during a weekend radio interview with Frekvence 1. He said that the country’s borders should be left closed for a full year in order to prevent a second wave of the pandemic. “I recommend that people take in the beauties of the Czech countryside for their vacations,” he said, promising to do the same in the Vysočina region. Zeman also said he’d be discussing the newly proposed budget deficit of CZK 300bn with finance minister Alena Schillerová. “I could warn that I’m going to veto it, but I won’t,” said Zeman. “We throw out CZK 30bn every year on solar plants. I have to ask if right now wouldn’t be a good time to throw this ridiculous expense out of the budget,” he added. He said he’d be discussing the state taking a stake in Czech Airlines again in order to save it and the jobs it produces.
