The number of unemployed in Croatia jumped by almost 20,000 in the past month, meaning that Croatia’s Employment Service (CES) has registered a total of 154,567 unemployed people. As of March 16, there were 134,717 persons in the register, a 14 percent increase during that period. Closer inspection of the data shows that 29,797 people actually entered the jobless registries during the period but that 10,290 found work. According to CES data, the spike in layoffs was due to the pandemic’s impact on the accommodation, food and beverage serving sectors (7,388 people affected), followed by retail (4,179), manufacturing (3,868) and other service activities. CES received 95,845 applications for job retention support.
