The Slovak government has toughened its restrictions on the freedom of movement ahead of the Easter holiday in reaction to a spike in cases of coronavirus and the first two fatalities from COVID-19. Strict stay-at-home rules have been implemented until the end of the holiday, with the government warning that family visits would be extremely dangerous, especially for the elderly. People will still be allowed to go shopping for food and basic necessities, and for walks outside but only with people they live with. Anyone entering the country must now inform their doctor that they have returned from abroad and quarantine themselves for two weeks. Prime minister Igor Matovič continues to warn Slovaks that a complete ‘blackout’ may become necessary but he’s also beginning to receive criticism for offering too little financial support to prop up the economy, employees and the country’s larger companies.
