Munich rolls out drive-thru virus testing

12 March 2020

There are currently 89 people infected with corunavirus in the city of Munich, but there are another 500 people that health authorities have registered as having been potentially contaminated. In order to speed up the process of tracking the disease in order to slow its spread, the city has set up a drive-thru testing center at the Bayernkaserne on Heidemannstrasse. Potential victims of the virus are instructed to drive to the center where they drive into tents where a person in full protective gear swabs the inside of the driver’s cheek through the open car window. As the procedure takes up to six minutes to complete, officials estimate they’ll be able to handle up to 60 vehicles per day. Results are currently taking two days to be determined and those who are tested are being ordered to stay at home for at least 14 days. In some cases, two people are coming for tests in the same car.
