Deutsche Post closing parcel center due to falling orders from Amazon

10 March 2020

Deutsche Post will be closing down a parcel center it operates next to an Amazon logistics center, a move that’s being put in connection with Amazon’s increasing use of its own delivery network. Until recently, DHL (owned by Deutsche Post) handled most of the Amazon facility’s delivery requirements, but the volume of this work has fallen dramatically. The decision affects 80 employees whose place of work will be closed on May 1. Deutsche Post will be offering them jobs elsewhere in its network, but the German labor union Verdi says the closing a mistake. All the other parcel delivery companies in Germany are hiring at the moment to deal with increasing volumes of business, said David Merck, a postal service labor specialist. “It’s only Deutsche Post that’s closing down one of its parcel sorting locations in this time of expansion,” he said.
