Work on the renovation of the lower portion of Wenceslas square is about to get underway, with Hochtief having won the CZK 326m tender. Completion of the project, which will create far more space for pedestrians, is expected to last until 2021. The city approved the basic design for the project, which was provided by Cigler Marani Architects, in 2005. “It’s a return to a more distinguished look for the center of Prague on Wenceslas square,” said deputy mayor Petr Hlaváček. The revitalization will stretch from Mustek to the intersection of Vodičkova and Jindřišska streets. Only cars with special passes will be able to drive on that portion of the square. Work on the upper portion of the square, which will bring tram lines back to the square while reducing parking, could get underway by 2022.
