Fifty percent of all waste produced in the Czech Republic comes from knocking down buildings, according to the daily Pravo. But this could change thanks to cooperation between Skanska and the Czech firm ERC-TECH which has invented a way to use recycled concrete called rebetong. The patented product behaves like cement but the mix it’s produced from comes from old construction sites. “It’s the only concrete in the world that uses 100 percent recycled aggregate,” says ERC-TECH director Pavel Gorecký. Skanska’s director of innovation and development Bohuslav Slánský says the material is ready to be used on the construction of family homes and apartment buildings as well as on roads. Skanska is working with the Czech Ministry of Environment to clear the way for the new material to be used for state contracts.
