Škoda Auto begins production of VW electric car components

9 September 2019

Škoda Auto has begun mass production of electric automobile components for Volkswagen. Initially, it’s been assigned to build up to 150,000 high-voltage traction batteries per year for use in plug-in hybrids, though this will be expanded over time. The decision for the plan in Mladá Boleslav to become involved in VW’s electric components was made in November 2017, according to Michael Oeljeklaus, ŠKODA AUTO Board Member for Production and Logistics. The battery packs will be used in the Škoda Superb iV, whose production began in September 2019 at the Kvasiny plant. The company invested 25.3 million euros in the production lines for high-voltage batteries. Roughly 200 employees are involved in the production of electric components. Christian Bleiel, Head of Component Production at Škoda Auto, said that “in developing the expertise required for this, we are making use of the exchange of information between experts within our overarching Volkswagen Group Components network. This bundles together knowledge of everything from battery cells to recycling.”
