The Western Balkans recorded its largest inflow of greenfield direct investment (FDI) in a decade during 2018: $9.36 billion. The biggest portion ($6 billion) went to Serbia, according to research by FDI Intelligence. It was the second biggest inflow of FDI in Western Balkan region since 2003. In 2019, the region attracted 147 greenfield projects. “Serbia, the largest state of the Western Balkans regarding territory and population, led the region in 2018 with a record $5.98 billion of foreign investments in 105 greenfield projects,” according to the report.
In 2018 Bosnia and Herzegovina got 11.6 percent of the total, including four greenfield projects. Montenegro attracted 11 greenfield projects, Northern Macedonia and Albania attracted $184.4 million and $809.9 million greenfield investments from June 2018 to May 2019.
