Plans for the construction of a new rail connection between Prague and Dresden would allow Czechs to travel to the German town in just 50 minutes. But they’ll have to wait 30 years for the work to be completed, according to current estimates. The 123 km route would require the construction of a new multimodal transportation hub in Usti nad Labem, which the train should be able to reach in just 25 minutes thanks to speeds of up to 350 km/hr. The most complicated portion of the project is a proposed 26 kilometer tunnel under the Ore Mountains (Krusne hory). The route between Prague and Lovosic is expected to run parallel to the D8 motorway and it’s this stretch that will be completed first, possibly by 2035. Current estimates put the price of construction work up to the German border at CZK 138bn.
