Smichov station’s reconstruction into transport hub approved

6 May 2019

Prague’s city council has approved the transformation of the Smichov train station into a modern transportation hub combining metro, train and bus lines under a single roof. The location already allows commuters arriving in Prague by train a direct connection to the city’s metro system, but the new project would add a bus station as well, while a new parking garage for 1,000 cars is also supposed to be built. “It would reduce transfer times dramatically and improve traveller comfort,” says Prague 5 deputy Jana Panena. “For us the project has numerous advantages, just like the construction of the modern Smichov City next door which it will be connected to.” The train station, originally built in 1862, will undergo a complete reconstruction, with its northern portion to be used for commercial uses. Work is set to begin in 2021.
