Low-cost Czech motorways attractive for truck transit

There’s no mystery over why the Czech Republic’s motorways are clogged with slow, lumbering trucks: it’s cheap. Auto.cz writes that road charges for logistics companies along with fuel prices make it comparatively attractive to travel through the country. Heavy trucks end up paying around €46.50 per 100 kilometers for road charges and fuel, but it’s a lot more expensive everywhere you look, according to a new study by the Center for Economic and Market Analysis (CETA) that was obtained by the Czech News Agency. CETA writes that the cost to cargo haulers in Austria is €52.28/100 km, it’s €58.26 in Germany and €58.21/100 km in Poland. Perhaps attracting trucks to its motorways is just a money-making scheme by the state, since it taxes fuel heavily. “If a liter of gas costs CZK 30, the portion that goes to taxes is CZK 18.05, or 60 percent of the price,” says CETA’s director of research Aleš Rod.
