The Czech government, which increasingly is learning how to cash in on the digital economy, is pushing a bill that would allow all municipalities to collect local taxes from customers of Airbnb-type services. “It’s another in a mosaic of measures through which the Ministry of Finance is reacting to the shared economy phenomenon and the changing business models that accompanies it,” the Minister of Finance, Alena Schillerová, told Novinky.cz. She said Airbnb providers hadn’t had to pay any local taxes until now. The daily tax will be CZK 21 once the regulation comes into effect in January 2020, and it’s expected to rise to CZK 50 in 2021.
The revised law would also simplify the regime, demanding a single occupancy tax rather than classifying between tourism and spa-related accommodations as is the case today.
