The Czech government is getting involved in the H-System scandal, a massive of case of fraud dating back two decades that impacted the lives of over 1,000 people. The developer (H-System) took money up front for dozens of flats that it never built. The company’s owner essentially stole and spent the money (over CZK 1bn) which was never recovered. Roughly 60 families formed a cooperative that rented the land and completed construction of eight apartment buildings, but the country’s Supreme Court recently found the rental contracts (and investments made on the basis of them) to be invalid. The families have been ordered to move out of what they consider to be their homes within a month. Prime minister Andrej Babiš claims to be shocked by the outcome and has pledged his government will look into the case with a view to finding some type of solution.
