In 2018, the German retailer Lidl will open more than seven new stores in Bulgaria. Lidl is the second largest grocer after Kaufland and has been operating in the country since 2010. New stores will be opened primarily in Varna, Plovdiv and Sofia. The estimated value of the investment in construction of one store without land is around €2m. Last year Lidl opened three stores and this month new one in Sofia. This one in Sofia has two floors, offers 120 parking spots and commercial part covers 1,300sqm.
The Billa grocery chain is expanding as well in Bulgaria, announcing plans to open 10 new stores in its three biggest cities, Plovdiv, Varna and Sofia. Last year the company recorded an increase in income caused by further expansion, new stores and new customers. Billa has 1.3 million visits per week.
