Prague’s Metropolitan Plan passes crucial milestone

17 April 2018

The city of Prague passed an important milestone on Monday by making public its new metropolitan plan. Work on the city’s new master plan began in 2012, with a view to having it come into effect by 2020. That goal proved too ambitious, but the idea is now to have developer begin building according to it by 2023. It’s a massively complex document, making it difficult to describe in just a few sentences. However, one of its most important conceptual shifts compared to the current system of planning is that it emphasizes the development of brownfields within the city’s borders rather than new construction spilling out into the fields around its edges.

This should provide some relief for the city strained infrastructure budget, since the former factory complexes and train stations that are the plans’ preferred development targets are already serviced by tram and metro lines. The public will have a one-month period to make comments and complaints beginning at the end of June. These will be discussed and debated over the course of 2020 and a final plan will be sent to the city council to be voted upon in 2022.
