Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban won a third consecutive term in office, with his right-wing ruling party Fidesz, grabbing nearly half the votes in Sunday’s parliamentary election, according to preliminary data released by the National Election Office. Fidesz is expected to maintain its two-thirds majority, with 133 seats in parliament. Nationalist Jobbik came in second, and is projected to win 26 seats, while the Socialists took third with 20 seats. Leftist parties DK and LMP are project to secure nine and eight seats respectively.
Orban, a Eurosceptic, campaigned on an anti-immigration platform and declared during a victory speech in Budapest on Sunday night that his win will give Hungarians “the opportunity to defend themselves and to defend Hungary.”
