Ikea running out of wood in Slovakia, planting own forest

17 October 2017

Ikea is investing into large-scale wood production in Slovakia. The Swedish furniture manufacturer and retailer is establishing new tree plantations near Malacky that would feed Ikea Industry chipboard production in the city. Trend.sk broke the news, writing that Ikea has not publicly unveiled its plan but had to apply for stricter approval from the environment ministry, as its new plantation should border with a bird nature reserve. Ikea wants to set up a 49 to 65 ha plantation and grow aspen there, as it’s a fast-growing tree. Trend reports that Ikea already has 500 ha of wood plantations in Slovakia in Zahorí and that it started the wood production business two years ago.
