16 August 2017

Air Berlin filed for a self-managed insolvency at the local District Court of Berlin-Charlottenburg on Tuesday. The German carrier will continue operating flights after securing a loan from the German government and Lufthansa. “We are working tirelessly to achieve the best possible outcome for the company, our customers and employees, given the situation,” Thomas Winkelmann, CEO of Air Berlin, said in a statement. The airline operates frequent domestic flights between major European cities and its Berlin-Tegel and Dusseldorf hubs. Air Berlin carried approximately 28.9 million passengers in 2016.
