Former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase, who received a two-year prison sentence for corruption, could be released early for good behavior, according to a report from the Jilava Prison parole board. The board said in its report that the legal terms for parole have been completed.
Nastase was sentenced in June 2012 by Romanian Supreme Court for his involvement in the “Quality Trophy” case. Quality Trophy was a symposium set up in 2004 by the State Inspectorate to monitor the regional construction sector. Nastase was convicted of financing his election campaigns with funds collected for the symposium. Participation fees totalled €1.6m, according to the server HotNews.ro
According to Nastase’s lawyer, Ion Cazacu, the parole board took into account his good behavior and Nastase’s activities in prison, which included the publication of three books.
Nastase, a former leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), served as PM between 2000 and 2004.
