Former PM attempts suicide to avoid prison

21 June 2012

Former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase tried to commit suicide on Wednesday night after police came to pick him up. He shot himself in the neck after asking police officers to let him go into his study on the pretext of bringing some books with him. He was rushed to Floreasca Hospital.

The incident appears to stem from a decision on Wednesday by the Supreme Court of Justice to send the former prime minister to prison for two years, after he was found guilty of raising funds illegally for his 2004 presidential campaign. The case is known as the ‘Quality Trophy’.

The sentence is final and cannot be appealed, despite Nastase’s insistence that he is innocent. He’s the first Romanian leader to be sent to prison since fall of communism in 1989.
