The construction of three interconnected town houses with 49 flats for CZK 158 million has been completed in Liberec. The town hall has a new apartment building after 15 years, announced Mayor Jaroslav Zámečník (Mayors for the Liberec Region) today that this should not be an isolated case and are preparing the construction of more.
“The last time the city built in Liberec was during the World Ski Championships. They were houses on Krejčího Street and then on Krajní Street. That was in 2008, when they opened. So after 15 years the city has another 49 new flats of its own. And we would like to continue with the construction of our own flats in this term of office,” said the mayor. He said the city has enough land. “It is rather the project preparation, building permits and then the money for the investment that are lagging behind,” he added.
Three new apartment buildings have been built in a year and a half on the site of the former primary school on Na Žižkově Street in the Rochlice district, and the construction was officially completed today by city representatives. The town hall plans to build another 40 flats on this very site. “We are currently opening envelopes for the designer who will design it. And if everything goes well, we could start construction within two years,” Zámečník said.
He said there is room for about 50 to 60 more town flats on Tálinská Street in Horní Hanychov. “We have additional space in Papírovo náměstí, where we are planning about 150 flats,” the mayor said. Roughly the same amount of urban flats could be built in a project by a private developer behind Kaufland in Pavlovice, where there is space for 300 to 500 flats, he said. “The city owns about 30,000 square metres there. And we would also like to have about 150 apartments there,” Zámečník said.
The city also has several smaller plots of land for development. “For example, we have a plot of land near the dam where about 10 apartments could be built. Then we also have a plot in the city centre, for example near Beseda, where the Euroregion Nisa wanted to build its house,” the mayor said.
Liberec, a city of 100,000, has about 1,000 flats in its ownership. It can use another 256 flats built in cooperation with Interma for social housing for 18 years. However, the opposition considers the council’s activity in housing construction insufficient and criticises it for it. Councillor Jindřich Felcman (LOL) has previously stated that the city could build at least 1,000 flats on its land.
