After eight years, Prague’s Blanka tunnel finally opens

21 September 2015

Following years of delay, Blanka tunnel, a key part of Prague city ring road, finally opened on Saturday. The 6 km long tunnel took eight years to complete. It was originally scheduled for completion in 2011. Costs hit CZK 43bn, CZK 10bn more than original estimates.

The tunnel is expected to help alleviate traffic congestion near the main train station and V Holešovičkách street as well as the Barikádníků bridge in Prague 7. There are fears, however, that traffic could become heavier in Prague 6 in the long-term.
