Air traffic at Prague’s Ruzyne Airport will be moved to a side runway for three months. The reason is the planned maintenance and delayed repairs of the main runway. The operation will move from March 28 to July 1, Prague Airport informed about it today. The move to the secondary runway will increase air traffic over the densely populated parts of Prague and Kladno.
The planes should land on the side runway in the direction from Prague, then take off in the direction of Kladno. In practice, however, the operation will depend on current meteorological conditions, especially wind. The airport said that the use of the secondary runway would increase aircraft traffic over densely populated parts of Prague and Kladno. “The only system solution for the future is the implementation of the parallel runway project,” said Jiří Pos CEO of Prague Airport.
The side track will be in operation in its full length of 3250 meters. At the same time, a webcam will be moved to it, so that the online transmission of traffic at Prague Airport will continue to operate.
On the main runway of the airport, it planned technical and construction works that should further increase the safety of air traffic at the airport. “In addition to regular maintenance, there will be an important reconstruction of runway B leading to the runway and an increase in the capacity of the cable section for lighting security of the runway.
According to the airport, modifications to the main runway are linked to the introduction of operational safety conditions required by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
Despite the current covid losses and the resistance of ecologists and some surrounding municipalities, the airport is counting on the construction of a new parallel runway for several years. The airport is currently working on extending the EIA permit and obtaining a zoning procedure. According to Pose, the runway is important for the future development of the airport and also for improving safety and the environment at the airport. According to earlier plans, its construction should begin in 2025 and take about three years. The estimated price is around nine billion crowns.
According to the airport, the more than three-kilometer-long parallel runway will be used primarily for landing aircraft. Thanks to it, the aircraft movement capacities at the airport, ie take-offs and landings, should increase to 72 movements per hour. After its completion, night traffic should be reduced.
