Airlines now clear to apply for permission to fly to Cuba

17 February 2016

Beginning this week, U.S. airlines can begin submitting applications to the U.S. Department of Transportation to start flying routes to Cuba. In December, the two countries signed an agreement to re-establish scheduled air services. The pact create the potential for 110 daily round-trip flights in and out of Cuba including 20 daily flights to Havana and 10 daily flights to other airports on the island. Numerous airlines have announced their interest in setting up flights, among them American Airlines, which currently flies a total of 23 charter flights weekly to the island from Miami, Tampa and Los Angeles. The new arrangement allows U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba under a variety of categories, including family visits, humanitarian work, journalism, education and for religious activities.
