Amazon is planning to move to move into a new 15-story building on the outskirts of central London in 2017. The GBP 500m development, known as Principal Place, is expected to break ground this month. Completion is set for 2016. The 55,740 sqm scheme, just north of the Liverpool Street underground station, will include tennis and basketball courts and a swimming pool on the roof-top terrace. Amazon says the new space will be big enough to fit 5,000 employees. The e-retailer currently has 1,700 London-based employees. Amazon has been headquartered at Slough since 1998.
“We have already invested well over GBP 1bn and created more than 7,000 permanent jobs across the UK,” Christopher North, managing director of Amazon’s head of UK operations, was quoted as saying in the UK Guardian. “To support our continued growth in the UK, we have secured this exceptional building giving us the capacity to hire thousands of new employees in London in the coming years, in addition to the thousands of permanent roles we will create across our UK fulfilment and customer service centres.”
