The demolition of the former national house in the centre of Deštné v Orlických horách should begin in April. An apartment hotel with a reception is to be built on the vacant site in 2025 at a cost of hundreds of millions of crowns. The building will also include an underground car park, a restaurant and a wellness centre. Mayor Simona Vlková (Žijeme pro Deštné) announced yesterday. The dilapidated building was built in 1929, it is not a listed building and has undergone several reconstructions.
“The restaurant and wellness area should be open to the public. We welcome this. We are afraid of another row of apartment buildings, another dead building in the centre. The latest information is that the demolition should be finished by the beginning of the summer holidays,” said Vlková. The municipality, with 590 inhabitants, has recently registered interest in the construction of apartment buildings.
The investor is the owner of the current building, Směnol, and the author of the project is the Ateliér 2 design office. Demolition should start in April, and we expect to clean up the site over the summer. Construction will start as soon as we get the building permit, the assumption is in 2025. The construction should take 16 to 18 months,” said Michal Žáček from Ateliér 2.
The historic building, rebuilt in the 1980s and 1990s, was built in 1929 as the former Deschneier Hof, later Hotel Michl. After the war, the hotel was nationalised and renamed Hotel National House and eventually Hotel Area, the municipality said. The property was owned by the municipality until the late 1980s and early 1990s, after which it changed hands several times.
“The residents of Deštné have an emotional relationship with the building. When it belonged to the municipality, theatre performances and other cultural events were held there, there was also a cinema. After the revolution, the community hall became a swimming pool. The building has been dilapidated for at least 15 years,” said Vlková.
According to her, the current owners bought the building about three years ago. “According to them, the building is beyond repair. We Dešt’any are sorry to see the building disappear. On the other hand, nothing can be done about it, it is not owned by the municipality and it is better to make something out of it that will not be dangerous,” added Vlková.
Deštné is one of the largest ski resorts in the Orlické Mountains. There are six apartment houses in the resort, three of them below the slopes and three in the centre of the village. According to the mayor, there are plans to build more than five more apartment houses, which could be built within five years. For example, one should be built at the Kozí Chlívek guesthouse near the junction of the II/310 and II/310 roads, another in the Jedlová section, in the centre of the village under the cemetery or under the black ski slope near the Srub Karolina restaurant.
“There is still interest in building apartment houses, but the interest in buying apartments is decreasing. The municipality is trying to negotiate with investors and find a common way to have some public services in the building, such as a restaurant or a hall, and to keep the building alive,” said Vlková.
