Czech premier Andrej Babiš has come to the rescue of Czech taxi drivers by forcing Uber to set establish a normal business in the Czech Republic. This would include forcing its drivers to declare their earnings and that they will have to acquire a license. Babiš sent the company a letter at the end of February calling on the company to respect the laws of the country or else consider ceasing operations in the Czech Republic. Czech taxi drivers have argued with increasing vehemence that alternative transport providers are breaking the law by driving unmarked cars with no taxi meters. In recent weeks, taxi drivers have staged demonstrations in Prague by driving slowly through busy parts of the city to disrupt traffic. The tactic appears to be working.
